Aerogel - Aerogel insulation -200°C up to 650°C

Aerogel insulation for hot, cold and cryogenic applications

Insulcon supplies flexible aerogel insulation blankets for industrial applications ranging from cryogenic service to temperatures of 650°C. Our portfolio combines Aspen Aerogels products, including Pyrogel® XTE, Pyrogel® XTF and Cryogel® Z, with Armacell solutions ArmaGel® XGH and ArmaGel® XGC.

These materials provide excellent thermal performance in a thin, lightweight and flexible format. Depending on the selected product and system configuration, aerogel insulation can contribute to energy efficiency, CUI protection, passive fire protection, acoustic performance and easier inspection and maintenance.

Why choose aerogel insulation?

Aerogel insulation combines extremely low thermal conductivity with a flexible blanket format. This makes it particularly suitable for installations where space, weight, installation time or complex geometries are important considerations.

Key advantages include:

  • Excellent thermal performance at reduced insulation thickness
    • Solutions for hot, cold, cryogenic and dual temperature service
    • Hydrophobic products that support protection against corrosion under insulation
    • Flexible installation around pipes, vessels, valves, flanges and equipment
    • Robust materials suitable for prefabrication and modular construction
    • Easier removal and reinstallation during inspection or maintenance
    • Thermal, acoustic and fire protection options within one product category

Insulcon’s internal technical training materials also identify energy saving, process reliability, workplace safety and carbon footprint reduction as key objectives of correctly designed industrial insulation systems.

Our aerogel product range

Pyrogel® XTE - Superior CUI protection - Best value for medium pressure steam service

Application Pyrogel XTE on heat exchanger

Pyrogel XTE is a flexible aerogel blanket for industrial hot service applications. It is designed to combine high thermal performance with long term protection against corrosion under insulation.

The material is hydrophobic and breathable, helping the insulation system and the underlying asset remain drier. Its low thermal conductivity allows considerably thinner insulation designs than many conventional insulation materials. Aspen states that Pyrogel XTE can be up to 75 percent thinner than competing materials, depending on the required thermal performance and system design.

Pyrogel XTE complies with ASTM C1728 Type III, Grade 1A and has a maximum use temperature of 650°C. The robust blanket can be removed for inspection and, where its condition permits, reinstalled afterwards.

Typical applications

  • Process pipes and steam lines
    • Vessels and industrial equipment
    • Heat exchangers
    • Valves, flanges and complex geometries
    • Petrochemical and oil and gas installations
    • District energy networks
    • Installations with limited available space
    • CUI mitigation programmes

Pyrogel® XTF - Uniting thermal insulations and passive fire protection for hot service

Application of Pyrogel XTF

Thermal insulation combined with passive fire protection

Pyrogel XTF combines the thermal insulation properties of Pyrogel XTE with passive fire protection for high temperature industrial applications.

The product is suitable for service from ambient temperature up to 650°C. Tested systems can provide hydrocarbon pool fire protection for up to three hours and jet fire protection for up to two hours. Pyrogel XTF can also be used as part of insulation systems designed to meet API 521 requirements for pressure relief and depressurisation calculations.

Unlike wet applied fireproofing systems, Pyrogel XTF requires no curing or drying time. The flexible blanket can be installed in different weather conditions and can be removed to inspect the underlying asset. Actual fire performance depends on the complete tested system configuration, installation details and required fire scenario.

Typical applications

  • Hydrocarbon pool fire protection
    • Jet fire protection
    • Pressure relief system design according to API 521
    • Process pipes, vessels and equipment
    • Vessel skirts and structural process components
    • Petrochemical, LNG, offshore and energy facilities

Passive fire protection systems must always be selected according to the required fire scenario, exposure duration, substrate, operating temperature and applicable project specification. The distinction between reaction to fire and fire resistance is particularly important when defining project requirements.

Cryogel® Z - Unmatched excellence for cold service applications

Application Cryogel Z

Flexible insulation for cold and cryogenic service

Cryogel Z is designed for below ambient and cryogenic applications. The product consists of a flexible aerogel blanket combined with an integrated vapour retarder.

Its low thermal conductivity helps minimise heat gain and product boil off while allowing thinner insulation systems. Cryogel Z remains flexible at cryogenic temperatures and does not require the complex contraction joints commonly used in certain rigid cryogenic insulation systems.

The maximum use temperature is 125°C. Depending on the complete system configuration, Cryogel Z can also contribute to acoustic attenuation and protection against cryogenic spills, pool fires and jet fires. A separate IMO compliant grade is available for relevant marine and offshore applications.

Typical applications

  • LNG liquefaction and regasification facilities
    • Cryogenic and below ambient pipelines
    • LPG and ethylene systems
    • Tanks, vessels and process equipment
    • Offshore and marine installations
    • Cold cycling applications
    • Prefabricated and modular installations

    • Pipes, vessels, valves and fittings
    • Offshore and marine installations
    • Oil and gas facilities
    • Applications requiring integrated vapour control

Selecting the right aerogel product

The correct material depends on more than operating temperature alone. The complete insulation system should be evaluated against:

  • Minimum and maximum operating temperature
    • Continuous, cyclic or intermittent service
    • Required heat loss or heat gain control
    • CUI risk and environmental exposure
    • Vapour barrier requirements
    • Pool fire, jet fire or cold spill scenarios
    • Acoustic requirements
    • Available installation space and permitted weight
    • Inspection and maintenance strategy
    • Applicable ASTM, EN, ISO, IMO, API and project specifications

Product suitability and required thickness must always be established for the specific operating conditions and complete system construction.

Rilco pre insulated pipe supports

Completing the aerogel insulation system at pipe support locations

Pipe supports are critical points within an industrial insulation system. The support must transfer mechanical loads while limiting changes in insulation thickness, unwanted heat transfer and interruptions to the weather or vapour control system.

As an addition to the Insulcon aerogel portfolio, Rilco offers engineered pre insulated pipe supports for hot and cryogenic applications.

PyroWrap® pipe supports are designed to match systems insulated with Pyrogel XTE. They are available as resting, guided, anchor and hanging supports. Rilco specifies PyroWrap systems for high temperature environments up to 650°C.

CryoWrap® pipe supports combine Rilco support engineering with Cryogel Z insulation for cryogenic piping. The supports can be configured for different loads and movement requirements and are used in applications such as LNG, LPG and ethylene systems.

The Rilco support range helps maintain a consistent insulation system through the support location while combining thermal performance with the required mechanical support function.
