Large hot spot in a reformer
A large hot spot was detected in the roof of a reformer, as result of damages in the ceramic fibre module lining. With the use of our hot endoscopy inspection technique (with its water cooled lance), we could detect a leak in one of the process tubes, which in the end caused over-pressure in a part of the reformer.
The refractory lining of the roof was completely eroded, as result of a small hole, just beneath the refractory lining. 35 bar of methane gas was blown into the reformer. Only after resolving this issue (by shutting down the process tube), the over-pressure changed into under-pressure and Insulcon’s hot spot repair team was able to start repairing.
The gap in the ceramic fibre module lining (an area of approx. 1,5 m2) was repaired whilst the reformer was in full operation (process temperature > 1100°C) and the hot spot above the roof plate was brought back from approximately 800°C to an acceptable 70°C.
